Major,
Can you see if you can dowload one of them now that I deleted it from my sent?
Before deleting

Well that didn't do any good,
That's not going to encourage file sharing. If every time we share files and our Total goes up. We'll hit our limit and not be able to share.
Their going to have to fix that. |

When we were on SL, we weren't charged for sharing or uploading...only for downloading. Now, they're putting it to us on all three of 'em!. At this rate, our allotments will be gone in no time! And...they think they're gonna get more money from us, to renew?? _________________ Gil |

This whole thing becomes more confusing with each file I upload and share. I emailed Linkup support a few days ago and asked for an explanation of their "social storage" policy. Here is the explanation I received after a few days of waiting:
Hello Gary,
As for the storage space displayed this storage space is the unique storage space. Customer will still have access to storage that we call "Social storage" Social Storage leverages the entire The Linkup community to allow each user access to massive amounts of storage for a very low price. It works by sharing storage quotas across all users who may have the same files. All your files remain private and secure, but, for example, if someone has the same file stored as you do (and you won’t know who that is, and neither will they) you get the split the storage usage with them. Another example: if 6 paying Linkup users are all storing the same 600 MB file, each user is only using 100 MB of their [already large] storage quota to store that 600 MB file (600 MB / 6 users = 100 MB each). The more you share, the more everyone benefits.
For the short term, we will not be enforcing the new “Social Storage” quotas until June 1, 2008. We expect that less than 1% of MediaMax users will have to reduce their storage utilization – The Linkup’s new Social Storage is going to enable you, and the entire The Linkup Community, to create massive file collections for an extremely low monthly price.

So, I guess, if other people upload the identical file(s) your storage count decreases even if your real file count remains the same. But I also am guessing if you share your files with someone else that isn't considered a new file but is subtracted against your gig allowance. Stay tuned for future explanations, clarifications and confusing responses.
At this point, I must say, the mechanics of The Linkup seem to be working rather well but the Linkup policies stink to high heaven.

I finally got the answer out of them, after a bunch of BS
Let's say I upload a 126MB file.
I share it with 5 members 6 people have it
They each share it with 5 more members 26 people have it
those 5 each share it with 5 more members now as long as no one has deleted their copy 126 people now have it
It will only take up 1MB in each persons acct.
So the MORE a file is shared, the actual storage space used in each acct. goes down.
So if I send you a file, you send it to someone else my total used storage goes down.
With this system we can each have several hundred gigs worth of files in our own accts.
So Upload share, share, share |

Mike...sooo, it's all based on mbs, not files . Looks like I might have to upload a few things....doesn't appear...yet...that anything of mine has been transferred. How about the rest of you?? How do they handle what you've uploaded, against what is already in your account (i.e. those things they have transferred over)? Is it the same thing, from wherever the files are shared? _________________ Gil |

Nothing of mine has been transfered yet.
I would think that the transfered stuff when and if it gets transfered would take up the full amount of space, until it gets shared.
I don't think they even know. |
