It could be the files. Some players won't play files under a certain bitrate. I had one that wouldn't play anything under 32kbs. I've also heard reports of some players having problems with some id3 tags. Sometimes you can remove the tags and get them to play. Some filesystems limit the number of files readable on the root.

Some of the new CBS Radio Mystery Theater mp3s encoded at 40kbps won't play in my player.
It shows an error for them but plays ones on the same disc that are encoded at 32 or 64.
