Waaaaaaaaaay back in the late 80's/early 90's, I was a dedicated Apple user. However, I made the switch to PCs because of the infuriatingly long wait for software to become available for the Mac along with a few other reasons(and I swore off Apple "forever"). Now, about 15 years later, I have started eying the Apple lineup again. I would like to hear from any MAC users about the performace/combatibility/warnings/and overall satisfaction they have with their computers. Any comments would be welcome!

My history is pretty much the same as yours. Was mac, switched to pc when there was much more available for pc. Now I have returned to the Apple fold and have been there now for about 3 years. (still have the pc as well but use it rarely these days) I hava an iMac and it has been a dream machine for me. A few months ago I added a MacPro laptop and have found that great as I now can do everything from wherever I want. I can't think of a thing I can't do with either. If there is something you want to ask, feel free to do so. Dfinagle has recently purchased a mac mini I think. He could advise you on that.[/b]

I have used the mac for professional book editing, music CD making, creating dvds and multimedia cds, web design, games and pretty much everything.

As my user name might suggest I am a Mac user.

I switched from PC to an iMac in November 2005. I bought a Macbook with an Intel processor in June 2007.

I love them both and would not dream of switching back. From an audio point of view I use Audacity for Mac which is free - but mighty powerful. I have encountered the odd stability problem with Audacity if I use it for long recordings (when transferring from old 7 inch reel tapes). I invested in WireTap Studio which is not cheap but it has proven to be very stable.

For burning I either use Toast or a free package called "Burn". The interface for the latter is not as pretty as Toast but it gets the job done. I like to split my CDs into 5 minute tracks for easy navigation and a little package called MP3 trimmer does a neat job with that. I then burn with no gap between tracks and it works a treat. There is also a freeware package called xmp3split which does the job too.

Outside audio I encounter the odd problem because the rest of the world (or most of it) uses Windows and MS Office. I tried AppleWorks (not I must confess the latest version of this) but didn't think it was especially good.

Eventually I came across Neooffice which is open source (and free though donations are encouraged). Neooffice seems to be able to handle MS office documents/spreadsheets and presentations very smoothly. My only "criticism" is that it can be very slow to open up. But hey this is a fantastic office suite for the price of a small donation so I really have no right to criticise at all.

I don't know where you are based but if you are in the UK the apple store online quite often has some decent bargains on refurbished machines. My iMac was a refurb and it has behaved beautifully. I am thinking about upgrading to an Intel iMac because if you have a legitimate copy of Windows XP you can install that and run either Mac or Windows on the machine. I run Windows on my Macbook for some work related stuff and it is superb. It also means that if there is the odd software gap in the apple range I can always run Windows.

Hope this is helpful to you

Regards from Norfolk

Good point, NorfolkApple. Smile I find myself toggling between mac and PC right there on the laptop just for the heck of it. Mind you I only use it occasionally to play the odd game but for those not aware the Macbook Pro (and others no doubt) run a full windows machine as well. You can shut down mac and reopen with a complete Windows machine. I also run bootcamp (er... maybe it's Parallels. I have both ) and that allows me to keep the mac open and open a windows window as well so I can work on both at the same time. How cool is that! So I can still look aat and use the occasional pc program I just can't do without. Wink

Thanks for the info guys. It seems like everyone I've talked to that has made the switch to Apple has never looked back. That's a good sign if I've ever seen one.
I've heard that the newer macs could run windows, but I wasn't sure how successful it was. From what you guys are saying it sounds pretty easy to do. Well, I 'll think about it a little more - but it's looking more and more like our next family computer will boast that famous fruity logo. Wink
