I'm looking for a program that will list files on a dvd or cd. I want to be able to position the file/folder names in alphabetical or numerical order, from their current listing. The listings would be in .txt format. This process would apply to each column in the list.
I have an old program called "Print Folder", but it only lists the text files as they appear, and their position can't be changed. _________________ Gil |

Hey Gil,
I use Koolguy's Listmaker but I suspect it's not dissimilar to the one you use. I don't have it on this computer so I can't experiment, but you might try sorting the folder before you run the list software. Also, if you create a .txt file, then copy that into a spreadsheet or database you should be able to sort it however you want.

Allan...I have the Listmaker. It not only lists individual files, but also those files inside a directory. What I really want is a program that copies the files directly from a CD/DVD, lists them as txt files, and then lets you sort by columns. I was really looking for something that didn't require a spreadsheet...although I know you can sort with those. _________________ Gil |

Allan...sorry, it's not the Koolguy's Listmaker I have, it's a program called "Directory Lister". (This is the one that lists the contents of directories). I went to the Koolguy Listmaker d/l, and got a security warning...like maybe it had a virus attached to it. Do you know anything about this? _________________ Gil |

It takes a little more work but you can do a dir in command prompt, and right click sellect mark, and highlight the listings that you want with the mouse.
Then paste it into notepad. You can easily edit this notepad file to look however you want.

John...I tried bringing up one of my txt files, in Notepad, and found I couldn't set anything in alphabetical or numerical order. There are also several columns, in directories, that don't show up in txt files. I want these to show, and be able to set them in alphabetical order, as well. _________________ Gil |

Yes after cleaning up the Text file I always import it into Acess or Excell for sorting etc.
Once everything is complete It can be exproted again as a text file.

Gil I use a piece of Software called Supercat. The full version allows me to export the contents of a CD/DVD directly into a variety of file formats including text, word, excel etc. You have asked for something that behaves in database format to provide a text file. No matter what, I think you will have to use several pieces of software to achieve your goal. As I like Excel sorting an exported file alphabetically from Supercat is really easy. I also like the fact that it literally takes seconds to find files for me on my disk collection. Its currently handling in excess of 500 DVDs and around 200 CDs with no signs of slowing up. I would rate it as one of the best bits of useful software I have purchased.
http://www.no-nonsense-software.com/supercat/
If you buy it dont forget to back up its data files from time to time in case your PC goes down.

I used to use this one: http://www.smartcdcatalog.com/
But found this better option and I use some of their other software as well!!
here is their page: http://www.collectorz.com/
I use the movie, mp3, book, game, and comic.
So far well worth it!! _________________ Gandalf.....................

Ian...seems "Super Cat" would be more what I'm looking for. In a directory, you can have the following "folder details" displayed..these are the one I would be using:
Name
Size
Type
Artist
Album Title
Year
Track Number
Duration
Date Created
I want a program that displays each of these columns, and allows you to display them alphabetically or numerically.
Can SuperCat do this?
For example...if I have a bunch of songs by Frank Sinatra, I can list all of his files in the "Artist" column, by "Frank Sinatra". Or...I can go to the "Name" column, and list all of his songs alphabetically. This same concept could also apply to OTR files....by name or by artist. _________________ Gil |

The trial version of Supercat does look pretty slick.

In answer to your question Charles on Supercat no it wont order the files exactly as you want but once you have exported to excel it is a matter of great ease to solve that.
I must admit to being curious as to why you want them all alphabetical or numerical? If I want to see what episodes of a show I just ask Supercat to look it up. It then gives me a full listing of every episode I possess with a reference to the disk its on. I do confess to having a US List in paper with all the different radio series shows on which also does a cross link to disks too. However all my UK material is on Excel but I still dont list the title of every individual episode. I do however have disks that show only complete series which I I identify with a unique code.
Ian

Ian....well, since most of my files (and folders) are scattered about, on various CDs and DVDs, I'm presuming this program would locate all episodes, and list "which CD/DVD" they are on, also showing the number of the disk. Then, if...and when...I decide to place all of them together, I would know on which CD/DVD to look. I'm presuming that's what your's mean...at the end...by DVD 15, DVD 125, etc., that being "location indicators".
For example...like your "Railroad Hour" (which the program brought all together), it would do the same for mine...if I chose a certain series.
I presume (in the beginning) you had to put each of your DVDs in the drive, and the program compiled the listing. _________________ Gil |

Spot on Charles. Supercat gives you the DVD or CD for each relevant item. It means that when I am researching a set I can instantly see where each source is and how big the file is which is also quite useful.
As you rightly surmised each disk has to be entered into the supercat system and a practical numbering system needs thinking out rather than using text titles. ie DVD001 or AUDBK001 or BRITIAN001 I use about seven different definitions to store but wish I had been more careful in the past about mixed subject disks. I am gradually rebuilding these but its not a priority.
Hope that all helps
