Quote: MediaMax / The Linkup is closing

We regret to inform you that we will be closing The Linkup service on Friday, August 8 at 5:00 pm PDT.

The Linkup is no longer accepting any uploads or new accounts, and no further charges will be made to your credit card. After August 8, your account will not be accessible, all your personal information will be deleted (username, billing information, history, etc), and your files will be deleted. Please download any files that are in your account that you wish to keep before Friday, August 8 at 5:00 pm PDT.

It was not possible to satisfactorily complete the move of files from MediaMax to The Linkup as we had expected, and as a result cannot offer a service that meets your expectations and our business requirements. This is a very disappointing outcome for us, and we know it has been a frustrating experience for many of our customers.

We are very sorry that we have not been able to rebuild our service as we had envisioned. We sincerely appreciate those of you who stuck by us and held out hope for the return of a great service, and apologize that things did not work out better. And also a special thanks and apology to those developers who have been developing applications on The Linkup API that can no longer be supported.

Sincerely,
The Linkup Team

I logged on this morning to find this notice appear. One thing they havent commented on is refunds of fees - Lawyers in the USA could be busy....

Wow! They have been in a down-spiral for years now, but, frankly, I'm surprised that they finally admitted how poor the service was and are actually shutting it down. I'm sorry to hear it because I was still holding out a thread of hope that it would all suddenly work...

I guess the only thing that really surprises me is that Streamload/MediaMax/The Linkup survived as long as it did given the abysmal service and the mistreatment of their customers.

I have enormous sympathy for all those who stayed with The Linkup and who have lost so much in time, money and corrupted/lost files. In its "Streamload" days the company had problems but overall users still came out ahead, by far. It has been downhill ever since. The encouraging thing about all of this is that if we could survive MediaMax/The Linkup we can survive anything.

I'm sorry to hear about it, it still had several good aspects, like the sharing person to person and the ease of uploading and downloading multiple files at once.

I've been logging in every few days looking for my 'missing' files. I noticed about a week and a half ago that they disabled comments to their blog.

Oh well... c'est la vie...

At least now I don't feel bad that I cancelled my account when they went to linkup.

I just got the email this morning. I, too, cancelled a couple of months ago.

I don't remember exactly, but I think I cancelled about a year ago. I guess I was fed up before most.

When I first heard about this, I'm afraid I resorted to the sort of language that will get you thrown out of a nice restaurant, at a volume that would get you thrown out of any restaurant. MediaMax was certainly an imperfect creature, but truth be told, it worked for me more often than otherwise. So I couldn't get all my Charlotte Greenwood shows to download - at least I could cuddle up with the illusion/delusion that they were there.

Now they're not - indeed, a whole freakin' LOT is not. What puzzles me is, if they were moving files (and none of mine ever appeared), the files must have still been wherever they were moving them from - right? I mean, if you want to get a bissel seltzer outta the icebox and take into the living room to enjoy while watching a movie, that can of Coke Zero or Tab or whatever is going to remain in the icebox until you go and get it and take it to the living room, nu? So why can't I go to their icebox and download as much of my stuff as possible, before the ship goes under on 8 August? I ask - and do I get suggestions? Encouragement? A consoling, pat-on-the-back, there-there type email? I'll tell you what I get - Schmantzes! Bubkiss! Schpilkes, I get! Naaaaaaahthing, except that farkochter message from the site, which I already read, which was why I was writing in the first place! From a collector's standpoint, there is not an afterlife sufficiently warm for these villains - I'm saying the center of the sun is insufficient! A krenk for those no-goodniks - a pox even!

I'm sorry you all had to read that. This whole situation offends my inner jew. If any of this spew of yiddish requires a definition, please, for the sake of the virtual ears here attendant, ask me for them in PM. Actually, looking it over, I think I can probably answer all enqueries here, as only "farkochter" really dips into the yidden pool of invective. But that doesn't mean I'm not still sore about it! A krenk on them, I say! An affliction!
